Ardisia species, particularly Ardisia japonica and Ardisia crenata, have a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other Asian herbal traditions. They are sometimes used as general tonics or to "nourish qi" (vital energy), which is a concept reflecting vitality and energy in TCM. However, the actual use of Ardisia specifically for "energy (lack of)" is more loosely defined and is often part of broader tonic or adaptogenic formulations rather than single-herb remedies. The scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Ardisia for improving energy or alleviating fatigue in humans is minimal to nonexistent. Most available studies focus on its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, or hepatoprotective properties, with few or no clinical trials directly addressing energy or fatigue.
