Evidence supporting the use of: Algae
For the health condition: Energy (lack of)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Algae, particularly species like Spirulina and Chlorella, are used to support energy levels due to their rich nutrient content. Scientifically, these algae are high in protein, B vitamins (especially B12 in some species), iron, and antioxidants. Small studies suggest that supplementation with spirulina or chlorella may improve feelings of fatigue and support physical endurance. For example, a 2010 double-blind study showed that spirulina supplementation improved exercise performance and reduced muscle fatigue in moderately trained men. Another study in older adults indicated that spirulina supplementation might improve measures of vitality and reduce fatigue. The proposed mechanisms include improved oxygen utilization, reduction of oxidative stress, and correction of mild nutrient deficiencies that could contribute to low energy. However, the quality and size of these studies are generally limited, and results are not always consistent. Much of the scientific support comes from small-scale or short-term trials, and large, high-quality clinical trials are lacking. While traditional medicine systems, particularly in parts of Asia and Africa, have used algae for centuries as a general health tonic, the specific use for treating fatigue or boosting energy has more recently gained popularity as a result of modern marketing and scientific inquiry. Overall, there is some emerging scientific evidence supporting the use of algae to help with energy, but it remains preliminary, and further research is needed to confirm its efficacy.
