Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ketosterones, particularly those derived from the plant Eurycoma longifolia (commonly known as Tongkat Ali), have been investigated for their potential effects on physical endurance and athletic performance. Some studies suggest that ketosterones (also called ecdysteroids) may promote protein synthesis, improve muscle mass, and enhance recovery, which could indirectly support endurance. A few small human trials and animal studies have reported modest improvements in exercise capacity, reduction in fatigue, and better adaptation to physical stress when supplemented with ecdysteroids or ketosterone-containing extracts. However, the clinical evidence remains limited, with most data originating from animal models or preliminary human studies with small sample sizes and variable methodologies. The proposed mechanisms include modulation of anabolic pathways, anti-fatigue effects, and possible influence on energy metabolism. Despite these findings, comprehensive, high-quality human trials are lacking, and the overall evidence base is insufficient to draw strong conclusions. Therefore, while there is some scientific investigation and mechanistic plausibility, the support for ketosterones in enhancing endurance is weak, and the rating reflects the need for more rigorous research before recommendations can be made.
