Rating (out of 5): 2

Jiaogulan (Gynostemma pentaphyllum) has been used in traditional Chinese medicine as an adaptogen and general health tonic. In recent years, some scientific studies have explored its effects on physical endurance and fatigue. Several animal studies have found that extracts of jiaogulan increase exercise tolerance, prolong swimming time, and improve energy metabolism, likely due to the presence of saponins known as gypenosides. Human research is more limited but includes a small number of clinical trials. For example, one double-blind, placebo-controlled study found that healthy adults taking jiaogulan extract for two weeks showed improved VO2 max and reduced lactate levels after exercise compared to placebo. The proposed mechanisms include enhanced nitric oxide production, improved mitochondrial function, and antioxidant effects. However, the overall quality of the evidence is moderate due to small sample sizes, short study durations, and heterogeneity in extract preparation and dosing. While traditional use supports its role as a tonic, the direct application to endurance is primarily driven by recent scientific research, albeit with preliminary and inconsistent results. More large-scale, well-designed clinical trials are needed to firmly establish its efficacy for improving physical endurance in humans.
