Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Resveratrol, a polyphenolic compound found in grapes, berries, and peanuts, has been investigated for its potential benefits in managing endometriosis, primarily due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Scientific interest in resveratrol for endometriosis stems from preclinical studies showing it can inhibit the growth and invasiveness of endometrial tissue in vitro and in animal models. Proposed mechanisms include the suppression of inflammatory cytokines, reduction of oxidative stress, and inhibition of estrogen-induced proliferation—key factors implicated in the pathogenesis of endometriosis.

A limited number of small clinical studies have been conducted. A 2012 randomized controlled trial found that resveratrol supplementation, when combined with oral contraceptives, resulted in greater reduction of pain scores and serum CA-125 (a marker of endometriosis activity) compared to oral contraceptives alone. However, these studies have small sample sizes and short durations, and some have methodological limitations. Further, systematic reviews highlight the need for larger, more robust trials to confirm efficacy and safety.

In summary, while there is preliminary scientific evidence (mainly from laboratory and early clinical studies) suggesting a potential benefit of resveratrol in managing endometriosis, the current level of evidence is limited. Its use is not based on traditional medicine for this particular indication. More high-quality human research is necessary before resveratrol can be routinely recommended for endometriosis treatment.
