Omega-3 fatty acids have some scientific evidence supporting their use for endometriosis, though overall the evidence is still emerging and not yet robust. Omega-3s, particularly EPA and DHA found in fish oil, are well-known for their anti-inflammatory properties. Endometriosis is considered a chronic inflammatory condition, and inflammation plays a key role in the development and progression of the disease. Some observational studies have found that women who consume higher amounts of omega-3 fatty acids may have a reduced risk of developing endometriosis. For example, a 2010 study published in the journal Human Reproduction found that women with higher dietary intake of long-chain omega-3s had a lower risk of endometriosis, while a higher intake of trans fats increased risk.
Experimental studies, including animal models, suggest that omega-3 supplementation may reduce pelvic pain, decrease inflammatory mediators, and limit the growth of endometrial lesions. A few small clinical trials have reported improvements in pain symptoms among women with endometriosis who supplemented with omega-3s, but these studies often have methodological limitations such as small sample sizes and short durations. Systematic reviews highlight the need for larger, high-quality randomized controlled trials to clarify the benefits and optimal dosing.
In summary, there is a plausible biological rationale and some early human and animal data to support the use of omega-3 fatty acids for endometriosis, but the strength of evidence is currently modest and more research is needed to confirm their effectiveness.
