Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Achyranthes, particularly Achyranthes bidentata (commonly known as "niu xi" in Traditional Chinese Medicine), is traditionally used in East Asian medicine to support women's reproductive health, including conditions involving menstrual irregularities and pelvic pain. Its use for endometriosis specifically is primarily justified by tradition rather than robust scientific validation. In TCM, Achyranthes is believed to "invigorate blood" and "remove stasis," concepts often applied to syndromes involving dysmenorrhea and chronic pelvic pain, both of which can be associated with endometriosis. Historical use is documented in numerous TCM formularies, where Achyranthes is commonly included in herbal blends intended to ease menstrual discomfort and improve blood circulation in the pelvic region.

However, scientific studies supporting its efficacy for endometriosis are extremely limited. Preclinical research suggests that Achyranthes may have anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, but clinical trials directly examining its impact on endometriosis symptoms are lacking. Thus, contemporary use is based mostly on traditional practice and anecdotal reports, rather than high-quality clinical evidence. Further research is required to determine its safety and effectiveness for endometriosis management.
