Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Stem cell therapy is being actively researched as a potential treatment for emphysema, a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease characterized by damage to the alveoli in the lungs. The scientific justification for this approach is based on the regenerative and immunomodulatory properties of certain types of stem cells, particularly mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Preclinical studies in animal models have demonstrated that stem cell administration can reduce inflammation, promote tissue repair, and improve lung function. Early-phase human clinical trials have found that stem cell treatments are generally safe and may have modest beneficial effects on quality of life and some measures of lung function. However, these studies are often small, uncontrolled, or preliminary, and there is not yet robust, large-scale clinical evidence showing significant, long-term improvements in lung function or disease progression in emphysema patients. No stem cell therapy is currently approved specifically for emphysema by regulatory agencies such as the FDA. Thus, while the scientific rationale is strong and early results are promising, the overall level of evidence supporting stem cell use for emphysema remains limited at this time, meriting a moderate rating (2/5). Ongoing clinical trials may clarify the efficacy and safety profile in the coming years.
