Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Centipeda, particularly Centipeda minima, is a herb commonly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and some other traditional medicinal systems. In TCM, Centipeda is known as "E Bu Shi Cao" and is typically employed to treat respiratory ailments such as cough, nasal congestion, and sinusitis. Its use for more severe or chronic respiratory diseases, including emphysema, is less well-documented but it is sometimes included in multi-herb formulations aimed at "clearing heat" and resolving phlegm in the lungs, which can be interpreted as addressing symptoms related to chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), a category that includes emphysema. There is minimal scientific research specifically investigating Centipeda's efficacy in emphysema. Some laboratory studies suggest anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of Centipeda extracts, which could, in theory, be relevant given the inflammatory nature of emphysema. However, these findings are preliminary, mostly conducted in vitro or in animal models, and do not directly translate to clinical efficacy for emphysema in humans. Clinical trials or robust scientific validation for its use specifically in emphysema are lacking. Therefore, the use of Centipeda for emphysema is primarily justified by traditional usage patterns rather than scientific evidence. The evidence supporting its effectiveness for this indication is weak, meriting a low rating.
