Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Bengal Fig, also known as Ficus benghalensis, is referenced in various traditional medicinal systems, notably Ayurveda and some folk medicine practices in South Asia. In these traditions, parts of the Bengal Fig—such as its bark, leaves, and aerial roots—have been used for a range of ailments, including respiratory conditions. There are some mentions of its use for symptoms resembling those of chronic respiratory diseases, such as coughs and bronchial conditions. However, direct references to its use specifically for emphysema (a chronic lung condition characterized by damage to the alveoli) are sparse and largely anecdotal. The rationale in traditional medicine often centers on its reputed anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties, which might have been thought to alleviate respiratory distress.

From a scientific standpoint, there is minimal evidence supporting the efficacy of Bengal Fig for emphysema. While some preclinical studies suggest that extracts from Ficus benghalensis might exhibit anti-inflammatory or antioxidant activities, there are no clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies directly validating its use for emphysema. Therefore, the use of Bengal Fig for emphysema remains primarily traditional, with a low level of supporting evidence and no confirmation in modern medical research.
