Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Orange essential oil (derived from the peel of Citrus sinensis) has a long history of traditional use in aromatherapy and folk medicine for promoting emotional well-being, calming nerves, and uplifting mood. Its use for "emotional sensitivity"—a term encompassing heightened emotional reactivity, stress, or mood fluctuations—is primarily rooted in traditional practices rather than robust scientific validation. Aromatherapists and traditional healers have often incorporated orange oil in blends intended to reduce feelings of anxiety and to create a sense of relaxation and positivity.

Scientific studies on orange essential oil’s impact on mood and emotional states are limited but growing. Some small-scale clinical trials and experimental studies suggest that inhalation of orange oil aroma may reduce anxiety in certain settings, such as dental offices or during medical procedures. For example, a 2012 study found that orange oil aromatherapy reduced anxiety in children at a dental clinic. Additionally, laboratory research has observed mild anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) and mood-lifting effects in animal models and human subjects, possibly due to interactions with the limbic system via olfactory pathways.

However, robust, high-quality clinical evidence is lacking, and studies often have methodological limitations or small sample sizes. No large-scale trials specifically address "emotional sensitivity" as a defined clinical condition. Thus, the use of orange essential oil for emotional sensitivity remains primarily traditional, with some preliminary but not definitive scientific support.
