Evidence supporting the use of: Borneol
For the health condition: Emotional Sensitivity
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Borneol is a bicyclic monoterpene that has been widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for centuries. In TCM, borneol (often called "Bing Pian") is believed to "open the orifices," clear heat, and resolve toxicity, and is sometimes used in herbal formulas for disturbances of consciousness or emotional imbalance. However, these uses are based on the principles and theories unique to TCM, rather than rigorous scientific validation by modern standards. There is little to no robust clinical or experimental evidence supporting its efficacy for emotional sensitivity specifically, though some animal studies suggest borneol may have sedative or anxiolytic effects. These studies are preliminary and do not directly translate to clear benefits for emotional sensitivity in humans. As such, the rationale for using borneol for emotional sensitivity comes primarily from tradition, not from well-established scientific research, and the strength of evidence supporting this use is low.
