Uva ursi (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi), also known as bearberry, has a long history in traditional herbal medicine, primarily for urinary tract issues. In some traditional European and Native American herbal practices, uva ursi was used as a mild diuretic to increase urine flow, which could indirectly address edema (fluid retention) by promoting the excretion of excess water from the body. The leaves contain compounds, such as arbutin, that are believed to have diuretic and antimicrobial properties. However, there is minimal historical emphasis on its use specifically for edema compared to other herbs, and the contemporary rationale for using uva ursi for edema is largely extrapolated from its general diuretic action. Scientifically, there is insufficient clinical evidence to validate the effectiveness of uva ursi for treating edema. Most modern research and usage focus on its antimicrobial effects for urinary tract infections rather than fluid retention. Systematic reviews and pharmacological studies do not support its use for edema, and it is not recommended in evidence-based medical guidelines for this purpose. Therefore, the use of uva ursi for edema is justified primarily by traditional use, and the supporting evidence is weak.
