Tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima) has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for a variety of conditions, including as a treatment for edema (fluid retention/swelling). Historical texts, such as the Chinese pharmacopeia, describe the use of Tree of heaven bark and other parts as remedies for conditions associated with "dampness" and swelling, which may correspond to edema in modern medical terminology. However, the evidence for its efficacy in treating edema is based primarily on anecdotal and traditional use rather than on controlled scientific studies.

Modern pharmacological research on Tree of heaven has focused on its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties, with little direct investigation into its effectiveness for edema specifically. No high-quality clinical trials or robust preclinical studies support its use for edema, and the mechanisms by which it might affect fluid retention are not well understood. Thus, while the use of Tree of heaven for edema is justified by historical/traditional practices, scientific validation is lacking, and any claims should be treated with caution.
