Evidence supporting the use of: Rubiaceae (unspecified)
For the health condition: Edema
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
The Rubiaceae family, which includes a diverse range of plants such as Coffea (coffee), Cinchona, and Morinda, has a long history of use in traditional medicine across various cultures. For the treatment of edema (fluid retention), certain genera within Rubiaceae—most notably Morinda (e.g., Morinda citrifolia, commonly known as noni)—have been employed in traditional remedies. Ethnobotanical records from Asia and the Pacific Islands indicate that decoctions or infusions of Morinda roots, leaves, or fruits have been used as diuretics to help alleviate swelling or edema. The rationale for such use is largely based on traditional knowledge passed down through generations, rather than on robust clinical evidence. Limited pharmacological studies suggest that some Rubiaceae species may possess mild diuretic effects, potentially attributable to specific phytochemicals such as iridoids or flavonoids. However, these studies are either preliminary, conducted in animal models, or lack rigorous clinical validation in humans. As a result, while the use of Rubiaceae plants for edema is well embedded in traditional medicine, there is insufficient scientific evidence to conclusively support their efficacy or safety for this indication. Further research is needed to substantiate traditional claims and to determine appropriate dosages and safety profiles.
