Quercetin is a flavonoid found in many fruits and vegetables, and it has been investigated for a variety of health benefits, including its potential role in supporting or treating edema. Edema is the abnormal accumulation of fluid in certain tissues within the body, often resulting from inflammation, injury, or underlying health conditions. The scientific foundation for using quercetin in edema stems mainly from its anti-inflammatory and vascular-protective properties observed in preclinical (animal and cell culture) studies. Quercetin has been shown to inhibit the release and activity of inflammatory mediators such as histamine and cytokines, as well as to stabilize capillary walls, which may contribute to reduced fluid leakage into tissues.
However, the direct evidence for quercetin’s effectiveness in treating or preventing edema in humans is limited. Most of the supportive evidence comes from animal models where quercetin administration reduced experimentally induced edema, such as paw swelling in rodents. Human clinical trials specifically evaluating quercetin for edema are scarce, and existing studies often use quercetin as part of a combination with other bioflavonoids or nutrients, making it difficult to attribute effects solely to quercetin. Therefore, while the mechanistic rationale is plausible and animal data are promising, robust clinical validation in humans is lacking.
