Pubescent Angelica (Angelica pubescens, also known as Duhuo) is primarily used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for its purported properties of dispelling “wind-dampness” and alleviating pain, particularly in musculoskeletal disorders such as arthritis and rheumatism. In classical TCM literature, Duhuo is not commonly cited as a primary remedy for edema (fluid retention); however, its role in promoting circulation and resolving dampness has led to its inclusion in formulas addressing conditions where fluid accumulation is a secondary complaint, particularly when associated with joint pain or “damp impediment.” The traditional rationale is based on the herb’s warming, dispersing action, which is thought to help move stagnant fluids and relieve swelling. There is little in the way of direct, high-quality scientific research specifically validating Pubescent Angelica for the treatment of edema in humans. A handful of animal and in vitro studies have explored its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, but these do not directly address fluid regulation or edema. Therefore, its use for edema is mostly justified by traditional practice rather than robust clinical or experimental evidence, and the strength of evidence for this indication is low.
