For the health condition: Edema
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Nardostachys jatamansi, commonly known as spikenard or jatamansi, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. In these traditions, the plant is often cited for its purported benefits in treating a range of conditions, including edema (swelling due to fluid retention). Ayurvedic texts describe Nardostachys as having diuretic and carminative properties, which are believed to help reduce swelling and support fluid balance in the body. The use of jatamansi for edema is typically part of broader formulations aimed at balancing bodily humors and supporting kidney function.
Scientifically, there is very limited direct evidence examining the efficacy of Nardostachys jatamansi for the treatment of edema in humans. Some preclinical studies have explored the plant's diuretic activity in animal models, suggesting a possible mechanism for traditional uses. However, these findings are preliminary and not sufficient to establish a clear therapeutic role in humans. No high-quality clinical trials exist to confirm its effectiveness for edema. Most current use is therefore based on traditional knowledge, with scientific validation remaining sparse and indirect.
