Evidence supporting the use of: Large-Leaved Linden
For the health condition: Edema
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Large-Leaved Linden (Tilia platyphyllos) has been traditionally used in European herbal medicine as a remedy for various ailments, including edema (fluid retention). The traditional use is based on the belief that linden flowers possess mild diuretic properties, which could theoretically help to increase urine output and reduce water retention. Historical records and folk medicine texts often recommend linden infusions or teas as gentle support for symptoms associated with edema, particularly when linked to mild circulatory issues or as a supportive measure in colds and fevers where swelling may occur.
However, scientific evidence supporting this use is very limited. While some chemical constituents of linden, such as flavonoids and volatile oils, have been identified, there is little direct research on their effects in reducing edema in humans. No high-quality clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies have confirmed the efficacy or safety of linden for this specific indication. Most references to its use for edema rely on anecdotal reports or traditional herbal compendia rather than empirical data. As such, while linden continues to be used in some traditional practices, its effectiveness for treating edema remains unproven by modern scientific standards.
