Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Edema, or fluid accumulation in tissues, can have many causes, but one common mechanism is decreased plasma oncotic pressure due to low serum albumin levels. Fish protein is a rich source of high-quality, complete protein, including essential amino acids necessary for albumin synthesis. In cases such as nephrotic syndrome, liver cirrhosis, or malnutrition, inadequate dietary protein can contribute to hypoalbuminemia, thereby exacerbating edema. Several clinical and nutritional studies, particularly in populations with protein-energy malnutrition, have shown that increasing dietary protein (from sources like fish) can help restore plasma albumin concentrations and reduce edema. For example, in kwashiorkor, a form of malnutrition characterized by edema, dietary intervention with animal proteins including fish has been an established part of nutritional rehabilitation. However, the evidence does not specifically single out fish protein as uniquely effective compared to other animal proteins. The use of fish protein in managing edema is therefore supported by the scientific understanding of protein metabolism and its role in maintaining oncotic pressure, rather than by fish-specific clinical trials. Nevertheless, fish is often recommended due to its digestibility and favorable amino acid profile. In summary, there is scientific rationale and moderate evidence (rating 3/5) for the use of fish protein in treating edema related to hypoalbuminemia, especially in malnourished individuals, but it should not be considered a universal remedy for all causes of edema.
