Evidence supporting the use of: Cyperus rotundus
For the health condition: Edema
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Cyperus rotundus (commonly known as nutgrass or purple nutsedge) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and other Asian folk practices. In these traditions, it is used for its purported diuretic and anti-inflammatory effects, which are considered beneficial for the management of edema—an abnormal accumulation of fluid in body tissues. Ancient Ayurvedic texts refer to Cyperus rotundus as "Musta" and emphasize its ability to balance bodily fluids and reduce swelling.
Despite these traditional uses, there is limited scientific research directly evaluating the efficacy of Cyperus rotundus for treating edema in humans. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts of the plant may possess mild diuretic and anti-inflammatory activities, which could theoretically support its use in edema. For example, certain studies have shown increased urine output in animal models, which is a key mechanism for reducing fluid retention. However, clinical studies in humans are lacking, and the available evidence is not robust enough to firmly establish its effectiveness for this indication.
In summary, the use of Cyperus rotundus for edema is primarily justified by traditional practice, with some limited experimental support, but there is a lack of high-quality scientific validation from human studies. More research is needed to confirm its efficacy and safety for this purpose.
