Cicada (commonly referring to Cicadae Periostracum, or cicada molting, known as "Chan Tui" in Traditional Chinese Medicine) is traditionally used in East Asian herbal medicine, primarily for conditions such as fevers, sore throat, convulsions, and skin conditions like rashes and itching. Its use for edema is not common in classical texts, but there are rare references to its inclusion in multi-herb formulas targeting swelling or fluid retention, often as a secondary or minor ingredient. These uses are largely based on the belief in its ability to "dispel wind" and "release the exterior" rather than direct diuretic or anti-edema effects.

There is little to no modern scientific research supporting the use of cicada for edema. No significant clinical trials or pharmacological studies have demonstrated a mechanism by which cicada exuviae would reduce fluid retention. Any action must therefore be regarded as anecdotal or based on traditional theoretical frameworks rather than empirical evidence. Thus, while there is some minor traditional precedent, the evidence supporting its use for edema is very limited and not substantiated by modern science.
