Evidence supporting the use of: Chinese salvia root
For the health condition: Edema
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chinese salvia root (Salvia miltiorrhiza, also known as Danshen) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for treating cardiovascular and circulatory disorders, including edema. In TCM theory, Danshen is believed to “invigorate blood,” “dispel blood stasis,” and “reduce swelling,” which aligns with its use to relieve edema—swelling caused by fluid retention, often linked to poor circulation or heart function. Historical texts and modern TCM practitioners often recommend Danshen as part of herbal formulas for conditions with fluid accumulation, especially when associated with blood stasis.
However, scientific evidence specifically supporting Danshen’s efficacy in treating edema is limited. Most modern research focuses on its effects on cardiovascular health, anti-inflammatory properties, and its use in angina or ischemic heart disease. Some animal studies indicate that Danshen may have diuretic properties and can improve microcirculation, which could indirectly help reduce edema, but these results are preliminary and not robustly confirmed in human clinical trials specifically for edema. The evidence rating of 2 reflects that while there is some traditional and preclinical rationale for its use, high-quality human studies are lacking.
In summary, Danshen’s use for edema is primarily grounded in traditional practice, with modest supporting evidence from laboratory and animal studies, but not yet substantiated by strong clinical trials focused on edema in humans.
