Evidence supporting the use of: Borassus aethiopum
For the health condition: Edema
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Borassus aethiopum, commonly known as the African fan palm, has a long-standing history of use in traditional African medicine. In particular, various parts of the plant—including roots, leaves, and fruit—have been employed in folk remedies for a wide range of ailments, including edema (swelling due to fluid accumulation). Ethnobotanical surveys in West and Central Africa document that traditional healers use decoctions or infusions of the roots or leaves for the management of edema, likely owing to perceived diuretic properties. However, the scientific basis for this use remains weak. Few, if any, pharmacological studies have directly investigated the efficacy of Borassus aethiopum for edema, and its active constituents have not been conclusively linked to anti-edematous or diuretic effects. Thus, the evidence supporting its use is based on traditional knowledge and anecdotal reports, rather than robust scientific validation. Until further preclinical or clinical studies are conducted, its use for edema should be considered as rooted in tradition, with limited empirical support.
