Lanolin is a natural, waxy substance derived from the wool of sheep and has been widely used as an emollient in topical skin care products. Its primary mechanism of action is forming an occlusive barrier on the skin, thereby reducing transepidermal water loss and helping to maintain skin hydration. This property is particularly beneficial in the management of eczema (atopic dermatitis), a condition characterized by dry, cracked, and itchy skin due to a compromised skin barrier. Several clinical guidelines and dermatology references acknowledge lanolin as an ingredient in moisturizers that may support skin barrier repair in eczema patients.
However, direct evidence from randomized controlled trials specifically evaluating lanolin for eczema is limited. Most scientific support is extrapolated from its general effectiveness as an occlusive moisturizer and its incorporation into widely recommended emollient formulations. There are some case reports and small studies indicating potential for allergic contact dermatitis to lanolin, so sensitization risk must be considered, particularly in individuals with chronic skin conditions.
