Evidence supporting the use of: Botanical Blend
For the health condition: Eczema
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Botanical blends have been traditionally used for the management of eczema, primarily within herbal medicine systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Ayurveda, and Western herbalism. These blends often contain a combination of herbs reputed for their anti-inflammatory, soothing, and skin-healing properties, such as chamomile, calendula, licorice root, and burdock. The rationale behind their use is rooted in centuries-old practices where plants with anti-pruritic (anti-itch), anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities were applied topically or ingested to alleviate symptoms associated with eczema, such as redness, itching, and dryness.
While some individual botanical components have shown promise in preliminary laboratory or small clinical studies (for example, chamomile and licorice extract), the evidence base for specific commercial or traditional "botanical blends" as a whole remains weak. Most claims are based on historical usage and anecdotal reports rather than robust clinical trials. Systematic reviews generally conclude that while some botanicals may provide mild symptomatic relief, the heterogeneity of preparations and lack of standardization limit the strength of recommendations. As such, most support for botanical blends in eczema management remains traditional, with only limited scientific substantiation for certain ingredients within these blends.
