For the body system: Ears
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Centipeda, particularly Centipeda minima, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda. In TCM, Centipeda minima (known as "E Bu Shi Cao") is traditionally used for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, and it is often included in formulations intended to address conditions such as rhinitis, sinusitis, and certain ear disorders. Specifically, it may be used for ear health in the context of treating earache, otitis media, or ear infections, largely because of its presumed ability to "dispel wind" and reduce swelling.
However, while there are some preclinical studies indicating anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects of Centipeda extracts, robust clinical evidence supporting its efficacy for ear conditions is lacking. The use in the context of ear health is primarily based on centuries of traditional practice rather than modern scientific validation. Most available studies focus on respiratory and nasal conditions, with only limited indirect evidence related to the ears. Therefore, the evidence rating reflects that its use for supporting the ears is rooted in tradition with some preliminary pharmacological rationale, but not strongly substantiated by high-quality clinical research.
