Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Plectranthus amboinicus, commonly known as Indian borage or Cuban oregano, has a long history of traditional use in various cultures for treating earaches and minor ear infections. In traditional medicine, particularly in South Indian, Southeast Asian, and Caribbean communities, the fresh leaf juice is sometimes warmed and a few drops are instilled into the ear to relieve pain and mild infection. The rationale behind this practice is based on the plant's known antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which have been demonstrated in laboratory studies, though not specifically in the context of ear infections.

Despite its widespread use in folk medicine, there is a lack of high-quality clinical studies or robust scientific evidence directly supporting the safety and efficacy of Plectranthus amboinicus for ear infections or earaches in humans. Most available research is limited to in vitro studies showing the plant’s extracts possess some antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities, but these findings have not been translated into controlled human trials for otic (ear) applications. As such, its use for earache remains primarily traditional, with only modest indirect scientific support for its potential benefits. It is also important to note that instilling any herbal preparation into the ear canal, especially if the eardrum is perforated, may pose risks and should be approached with caution.
