Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Belladonna (Atropa belladonna), also known as deadly nightshade, has a long history of use in traditional medicine, including for symptoms such as earache or ear infections. In traditional European herbalism and especially in homeopathy, Belladonna is sometimes recommended for the relief of acute, throbbing ear pain accompanied by redness, heat, and sensitivity, which are believed to indicate an "inflammatory" process. Homeopathic preparations, in particular, use very dilute forms of Belladonna in the hope of alleviating such symptoms. However, these uses are based primarily on traditional doctrine and the symptom-picture matching central to homeopathy, rather than on scientific studies or clinical trials.

Modern scientific evidence supporting Belladonna’s efficacy for ear infections or earaches is lacking. There are no robust clinical trials demonstrating that Belladonna, in any form, is effective for treating otitis media or other ear conditions. Its established pharmacological effects are due to anticholinergic alkaloids (such as atropine), which can have significant toxicities. Because of safety concerns and the absence of clinical evidence, Belladonna is not recommended in evidence-based medicine for ear infections or ear pain. Its use persists in some traditional and alternative medicine circles but should be approached with caution.
