Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Codonopsis (often spelled "Codonopsis" rather than "Condonopsis," and commonly known as Dang Shen) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In TCM, Codonopsis root is used as a tonic to strengthen "qi" (vital energy), support the spleen and lungs, improve appetite, and combat fatigue or weakness. Dizziness in TCM is often attributed to deficiency of qi or blood, and Codonopsis is sometimes included in herbal formulas to address these underlying causes. However, the scientific evidence supporting Codonopsis specifically for the treatment or prevention of dizziness is limited. Clinical studies are sparse, and most research focuses on its adaptogenic, immune-modulating, or anti-fatigue effects. While there are some animal and in vitro studies suggesting Codonopsis may have beneficial effects on the nervous system and circulation, these findings are indirect and not specific to dizziness. Therefore, its use for dizziness is justified primarily by tradition, with only anecdotal and historical evidence, rather than robust scientific validation. The overall quality of evidence supporting Codonopsis for dizziness is low, reflecting a rating of 2 out of 5.
