Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Atractylone is a sesquiterpenoid compound found in the rhizome of Atractylodes macrocephala, widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, extracts of Atractylodes—which contain atractylone—are traditionally employed to "strengthen the spleen" and "resolve dampness," concepts believed to address symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, and digestive issues. The rationale in traditional medicine links dizziness to internal dampness and spleen deficiency, and thus Atractylodes preparations are commonly prescribed in multi-herb formulas for patients presenting with dizziness.

However, there is limited direct scientific evidence specifically supporting the use of atractylone or Atractylodes extracts for the treatment of dizziness. While some preclinical studies have demonstrated that atractylone has anti-inflammatory and gastroprotective effects, there is a lack of clinical trials or robust mechanistic studies linking atractylone to the alleviation of dizziness in humans. As a result, its use for this purpose remains rooted primarily in traditional practice rather than scientific validation. The evidence rating of "2" reflects the presence of longstanding traditional use with some supportive, but indirect, pharmacological studies, without direct clinical evidence for dizziness.
