Saccharomyces boulardii and Diverticulitis: Evidence Overview

Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic yeast commonly used to support gut health, especially in the prevention and management of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and certain gastrointestinal infections. Its use in diverticulitis, however, is supported by limited scientific evidence.

A few small clinical trials and observational studies have explored the potential of probiotics, including S. boulardii, in patients with diverticular disease (which encompasses both diverticulosis and diverticulitis). The proposed benefits are largely theoretical and center on the yeast’s ability to modulate the intestinal microbiota, reduce inflammation, and enhance mucosal barrier function. Some studies suggest that S. boulardii may help reduce symptoms, lower the risk of recurrence, and improve quality of life in patients with diverticular disease, especially when used alongside standard medical therapy.

However, high-quality randomized controlled trials specifically assessing S. boulardii in acute diverticulitis are lacking. The available studies are often small, lack rigorous controls, or bundle S. boulardii with other probiotic strains, making it difficult to attribute effects solely to this yeast. Major gastroenterology guidelines do not currently recommend S. boulardii as a primary treatment for diverticulitis.

In summary, while some preliminary data and theoretical rationale exist, the current scientific support for S. boulardii in diverticulitis is limited, and its use should be considered adjunctive rather than primary, pending further research.
