Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bifidobacterium lactis is a probiotic bacterium that has been investigated for its effects on gastrointestinal health, including in conditions such as diverticulitis. Diverticulitis is characterized by inflammation and infection of diverticula in the colon. The rationale for using B. lactis in diverticulitis is primarily based on its ability to modulate the gut microbiota, enhance intestinal barrier function, and reduce inflammation. Several studies have shown that certain probiotic strains, including B. lactis, may help balance the gut flora and potentially reduce inflammation, which is relevant because dysbiosis (an imbalance of intestinal bacteria) is thought to play a role in diverticular disease. However, direct clinical evidence specifically supporting the use of B. lactis in the treatment or prevention of diverticulitis remains limited. Most studies use mixed probiotic formulations or focus on related gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Some small studies and reviews suggest possible benefits of probiotics (including B. lactis) in reducing symptoms and recurrence of diverticular disease, but robust, large-scale randomized controlled trials are lacking. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale and some preliminary evidence, the use of B. lactis for diverticulitis is not strongly supported by high-quality clinical data, and its evidence rating is modest. Probiotics may be considered as an adjunct to standard therapy, but should not replace established medical management.
