Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 3

Ginkgo Flavone Glycosides are the primary active compounds in standardized Ginkgo biloba extracts, such as EGb761. There is moderate scientific evidence supporting their use in the management of diabetic retinopathy, largely based on their pharmacological properties and some clinical research. Ginkgo biloba extract exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and vasoregulatory effects, which are relevant because oxidative stress and microvascular dysfunction play central roles in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy.

A number of studies, including small randomized controlled trials and experimental models, have investigated Ginkgo biloba extract in diabetic retinopathy. For example, a few clinical studies have found that Ginkgo biloba extract can improve retinal blood flow and may slow the progression of early-stage diabetic retinopathy. A 2003 randomized study (Evans et al.) reported that Ginkgo extract could help stabilize visual function in patients with diabetic retinopathy. However, the number and size of high-quality studies are limited, and meta-analyses conclude that while there is promise, larger and more rigorous trials are needed.

Thus, the use of Ginkgo Flavone Glycosides in diabetic retinopathy is justified by a plausible biological rationale and some clinical data, but the evidence base is not yet robust. Current clinical guidelines do not recommend it as standard therapy, but it remains a subject of ongoing research.
