Evidence supporting the use of: Vitamin B5 (calcium pantothenate)
For the health condition: Dermatitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Vitamin B5 (calcium pantothenate) is an essential nutrient involved in numerous metabolic pathways, including the synthesis and metabolism of fatty acids. Its role in skin health is primarily linked to its function in cellular metabolism and potential anti-inflammatory effects. There is some scientific basis, though limited, for using vitamin B5 in the support or treatment of dermatitis, particularly in cases of deficiency.
Animal studies and a handful of small human trials have suggested that pantothenic acid may help maintain skin barrier function and promote wound healing. However, clinical evidence regarding its effectiveness specifically for dermatitis (such as atopic dermatitis or contact dermatitis) is weak. Deficiency of vitamin B5 is rare, but when it occurs, it can cause symptoms including dermatitis-like skin changes, which are reversible with supplementation. This has led to the rationale for vitamin B5 supplementation in cases where deficiency is suspected to contribute to skin symptoms.
However, robust, high-quality clinical trials supporting the use of vitamin B5 supplementation in otherwise healthy individuals with dermatitis are lacking. Most dermatological guidelines do not recommend B5 supplementation as a primary or adjunctive therapy for dermatitis unless a deficiency is present. Thus, while there is some scientific rationale based on its physiological roles and deficiency syndromes, evidence for its direct therapeutic benefit in dermatitis is limited.
