Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Shark liver oil has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Scandinavian and East Asian cultures. It has been applied topically or consumed orally for various ailments, including skin conditions like dermatitis. The oil is rich in alkylglycerols, squalene, and omega-3 fatty acids, which are believed to have anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. However, scientific studies directly investigating the efficacy of shark liver oil specifically for dermatitis are scarce. Most available research focuses on its general effects on immune function or its use in wound healing and skin barrier repair, rather than on dermatitis itself. There is some preliminary evidence suggesting that components like squalene may help moisturize the skin and reduce inflammation, potentially offering symptomatic relief in inflammatory skin conditions. Nonetheless, these findings are not robustly supported by high-quality clinical trials targeting dermatitis. Therefore, while the use of shark liver oil for dermatitis is primarily rooted in traditional practices, its effectiveness remains largely anecdotal and not rigorously validated by modern scientific research.
