Mimosa pudica, commonly known as the Sensitive Plant, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and folk medicine across Asia and parts of Africa and the Americas. Its use for skin ailments, including dermatitis, is documented in ethnobotanical literature. Traditional healers have used preparations of Mimosa pudica leaves, roots, or extracts to manage skin inflammation, itching, rashes, and minor wounds. The rationale for its use is often based on its perceived anti-inflammatory, astringent, and antimicrobial properties. Scientific validation of these effects is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies have suggested that extracts of Mimosa pudica possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, which could theoretically be beneficial for skin conditions like dermatitis. However, clinical trials in humans specifically evaluating its efficacy for dermatitis are lacking. The evidence supporting its use is thus primarily traditional, with a few preclinical studies offering weak support for its purported effects. Overall, while there is a historical precedent for using Sensitive Plant in dermatitis, modern scientific evidence remains insufficient and the quality of available data is low.
