Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Quince (Cydonia oblonga) has a history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in regions such as the Middle East, Mediterranean, and parts of Asia. In these traditions, quince seeds and sometimes quince fruit extracts have been applied topically or used in preparations for various skin ailments, including dermatitis, eczema, and minor wounds. The traditional rationale often centers on quince seed mucilage, which forms a gel when soaked in water and is thought to soothe irritated skin and provide a protective barrier. However, scientific validation for these effects remains limited. A small number of laboratory studies have explored the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of quince extracts, but direct clinical evidence for its efficacy in treating dermatitis is lacking. No major clinical trials or systematic reviews support quince as an evidence-based intervention for dermatitis. Therefore, its use for this purpose is best characterized as traditional, with weak supporting evidence.
