Evidence supporting the use of: Nicotinamide
For the health condition: Dermatitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Nicotinamide (also known as niacinamide), a form of vitamin B3, has scientific evidence supporting its use in the management of certain forms of dermatitis, particularly atopic dermatitis and some other inflammatory skin conditions. Nicotinamide exhibits anti-inflammatory properties, helps restore the skin barrier, and reduces transepidermal water loss, which are beneficial in dermatitis management. Several randomized controlled trials and clinical studies have demonstrated that topical nicotinamide can be effective in reducing symptoms such as erythema, scaling, and pruritus in atopic dermatitis and other eczematous conditions. For example, a 1995 study published in the International Journal of Dermatology found that a 5% nicotinamide cream was as effective as 1% hydrocortisone in treating atopic dermatitis, with fewer side effects related to skin thinning.
Oral nicotinamide has also been studied, with some evidence suggesting it can reduce inflammation and improve skin barrier function. Its favorable safety profile, especially compared to topical corticosteroids, makes it a valuable adjunct or alternative in certain cases. While not the first-line treatment, its inclusion in clinical guidelines for atopic dermatitis and rosacea further supports its validated use. Overall, the scientific evidence, including double-blind, placebo-controlled studies and meta-analyses, rates its efficacy as moderate to strong, justifying its use as a supportive therapy in dermatitis.
