Mangostin, particularly α-mangostin, is a bioactive xanthone derived from the mangosteen fruit (Garcinia mangostana). Its use for dermatitis primarily stems from preclinical scientific research rather than traditional medicine. Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that mangostin possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, both of which are relevant to dermatitis, a condition characterized by inflammation and oxidative stress in the skin.
For example, studies have shown that α-mangostin can inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6, and reduce markers of oxidative damage in skin cells. In mouse models of atopic dermatitis, topical or oral administration of mangostin extracts has resulted in reduced skin inflammation, less epidermal thickening, and lower levels of inflammatory mediators.
Despite these promising preclinical findings, there is currently a lack of robust clinical trials in humans evaluating mangostin's efficacy or safety for treating dermatitis. As such, the evidence is limited to laboratory and animal models, and no major dermatological guidelines recommend its use. In summary, while scientific research provides a rationale for mangostin's potential benefit in dermatitis, clinical validation in humans is still lacking.
