Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Litsea species, particularly Litsea cubeba (also known as May Chang), have a history of use in traditional medicine, especially in East and Southeast Asia. The essential oil is sometimes applied topically for various skin conditions, including dermatitis, based on traditional practices. The rationale is often attributed to its purported anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and soothing properties. However, scientific validation for these claims is limited. While some in vitro studies show that Litsea essential oil possesses mild antimicrobial activity, there is a lack of robust clinical research specifically evaluating its efficacy for dermatitis in humans. Case reports or ethnobotanical surveys may mention its use, but evidence is largely anecdotal. There are also concerns about potential skin irritation or sensitization from essential oils in general, including Litsea. Therefore, while traditional use exists, scientific evidence is minimal, and its effectiveness and safety for dermatitis remain unproven.
