Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Kokilaksha (Asteracantha longifolia, also known as Hygrophila auriculata) is primarily used in Ayurveda and other traditional Indian medicine systems. Its use in the management of skin disorders, including dermatitis, is largely based on traditional practice rather than robust scientific validation. Classical Ayurvedic texts describe Kokilaksha as possessing "kusthaghna" (anti-skin disease) properties, and it is sometimes included in polyherbal formulations aimed at treating various skin problems such as itching, rashes, and inflammation—symptoms that overlap with dermatitis. Traditional preparations may use the whole plant or specific extracts, often administered topically or orally. However, the scientific literature offers limited evidence regarding its effectiveness for dermatitis specifically. While some preclinical studies suggest that extracts of Kokilaksha possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities, these findings are mainly from in vitro or animal studies, and not directly linked to dermatitis. There is a lack of well-designed human clinical trials evaluating its efficacy in dermatitis or related skin conditions. Thus, its use for dermatitis remains rooted in tradition, with only weak preliminary scientific support for its possible mechanisms of action.
