Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Indian Fagonia (Fagonia indica), also known as Dhamasa, has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine, primarily for a range of inflammatory and skin disorders, including dermatitis. Traditional healers have used various parts of the plant (leaves, stems, flowers) as poultices or decoctions to alleviate skin irritation, itching, and rashes. The rationale for its use is based on its reputed anti-inflammatory and cooling properties according to classical texts and community practices. However, while there is some laboratory research indicating that extracts of Fagonia species possess general antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, there is very limited direct scientific research specifically evaluating its effectiveness for dermatitis in humans or animal models. The available studies are either in vitro or focus on other conditions such as liver protection or general skin healing, rather than dermatitis per se. Modern clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies directly linking Indian Fagonia to dermatitis treatment are lacking. Thus, its use for this condition is justified primarily by tradition, with minimal scientific validation to date.
