Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

There is a growing body of scientific evidence supporting the use of hemp and its derivatives, particularly hemp seed oil and cannabidiol (CBD), in the treatment and management of dermatitis, including atopic dermatitis (eczema). Hemp seed oil is rich in essential fatty acids such as omega-3 and omega-6, which are known to play a role in maintaining skin barrier function and modulating inflammation. Several small-scale clinical trials and laboratory studies have shown that topical application of hemp seed oil can improve skin hydration, reduce dryness, and alleviate itchiness associated with dermatitis.

For example, a randomized, single-blind crossover study published in 2005 found that dietary hempseed oil improved clinical symptoms of atopic dermatitis compared to olive oil, likely due to its fatty acid profile. Additionally, in vitro and animal studies suggest that CBD has anti-inflammatory properties and may reduce the expression of inflammatory cytokines in skin cells, which could be beneficial for inflammatory skin conditions such as dermatitis. However, while the evidence is promising, large-scale, high-quality clinical trials are still limited.

Overall, the scientific evidence supporting hemp’s role in treating dermatitis is moderate and continues to evolve. It is generally considered safe for topical use, but individuals should consult healthcare professionals before initiating treatment, especially if considering oral supplementation or products containing cannabinoids.
