Evidence supporting the use of: Hedyotis diffusa
For the health condition: Dermatitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Hedyotis diffusa, also known as Oldenlandia diffusa or "Bai Hua She She Cao" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use in East Asian herbal medicine. Traditionally, this herb is used to clear heat and toxins from the body and is commonly prescribed for conditions associated with inflammation and infection, including certain skin disorders such as dermatitis. Historical TCM texts and pharmacopoeias often mention its utility in treating "heat-toxin" syndromes, which may present as skin eruptions, eczema, or general dermatitis. However, while there is a clear tradition of using Hedyotis diffusa for inflammatory skin diseases, direct scientific validation for its efficacy specifically in dermatitis is limited. Some pharmacological studies have demonstrated that Hedyotis diffusa contains compounds with anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antioxidant properties, which could theoretically benefit inflammatory skin conditions. For example, in vitro and animal studies have shown that extracts of Hedyotis diffusa can inhibit inflammatory mediators and modulate immune responses. Nonetheless, clinical trials directly assessing its effectiveness for dermatitis in humans are lacking. Therefore, the evidence base is largely traditional, with some supportive but indirect pharmacological data, but insufficient robust scientific validation to warrant a higher score.
