Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Frankincense (Boswellia spp.) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, including Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, for various skin conditions such as dermatitis, eczema, and wounds. The resin is valued for its anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, and topical applications of frankincense oil or extracts have been used in folk remedies for irritated or inflamed skin. However, scientific validation for its efficacy in treating dermatitis specifically is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that boswellic acids, the active compounds in frankincense, possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that might benefit inflammatory skin conditions. For example, boswellic acids can inhibit pro-inflammatory enzymes like 5-lipoxygenase, potentially reducing skin inflammation. Despite these findings, robust clinical trials in humans with dermatitis are lacking. Thus, the primary support for frankincense in treating dermatitis comes from tradition, not from high-quality scientific studies. More research, especially controlled clinical trials, is needed to confirm its safety and efficacy for dermatitis management in humans.
