Fang-Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix; 防風) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb widely used in classical herbal formulas for skin disorders, including dermatitis, particularly those characterized in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as "wind" conditions. According to TCM theory, Fang-Feng is thought to "expel wind" and alleviate symptoms such as itching, redness, and swelling, which are often present in dermatitis.

Historical TCM texts, such as the “Shennong Bencao Jing” and subsequent materia medica, document Fang-Feng’s use in formulas like Xiao Feng San, which is still commonly prescribed for eczema and dermatitis-like presentations. The herb is believed to have anti-inflammatory and antipruritic properties from a traditional perspective.

Scientific evidence for Fang-Feng’s efficacy in dermatitis is limited. While some in vitro and animal studies indicate anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects of its extracts, high-quality clinical trials in humans specifically assessing Fang-Feng for dermatitis are lacking. Thus, its use for dermatitis is justified primarily by tradition, with weak but suggestive pharmacological support.
