Evidence supporting the use of: European Golden Rod
For the health condition: Dermatitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
European Golden Rod (Solidago virgaurea) has traditionally been used in European herbal medicine, primarily for its diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. Historical records and folk medicine sources suggest its application for a variety of skin conditions, including dermatitis, though its primary uses have been for urinary tract issues. The rationale for its use in dermatitis is mostly based on its purported anti-inflammatory and soothing effects, which were believed to alleviate skin irritation and promote healing.
However, direct scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of European Golden Rod specifically for dermatitis is minimal. Most pharmacological studies have focused on its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory constituents—such as flavonoids, saponins, and phenolic acids—but these studies rarely address dermatitis directly. Clinical trials investigating its effects on human dermatological conditions are lacking. Therefore, while its use for dermatitis is rooted in traditional practices, robust clinical validation is absent, and the evidence is largely anecdotal or based on general anti-inflammatory properties demonstrated in vitro or in animal models.
