Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

English Plantain (Plantago lanceolata) has a long history of traditional use in European and folk medicine for treating various skin conditions, including dermatitis. Traditionally, the leaves were applied as poultices or made into topical preparations to help soothe inflamed or irritated skin. The rationale behind its use lies in the plant's mucilage content, which provides a soothing effect, and its reported anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. However, while these properties have been observed in laboratory settings, there is a lack of high-quality clinical trials directly supporting the efficacy of English Plantain for dermatitis in humans. Most references to its use are found in herbal medicine texts and ethnobotanical surveys, rather than in peer-reviewed scientific literature. Thus, while there is a clear traditional precedent for its use in dermatitis, scientific validation remains limited to preliminary in vitro or animal studies examining anti-inflammatory effects of extracts. Its use for dermatitis should therefore be considered as supported primarily by tradition, with only modest evidence from modern research.
