Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Dianthus (commonly known as pinks or carnations) is primarily used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where it is referred to as "Qumai." In TCM, Dianthus is believed to have cooling properties and is traditionally employed to "clear heat" and promote urination, often for conditions such as urinary tract infections and edema. Its use for skin conditions, including dermatitis, is less common but sometimes mentioned in herbal formulas that target "heat" or "dampness" affecting the skin. However, there is little direct documentation of Dianthus being a major remedy for dermatitis specifically within classical TCM texts.

Scientifically, there is minimal evidence supporting the efficacy of Dianthus for dermatitis. A few laboratory studies have explored the anti-inflammatory or antimicrobial properties of certain Dianthus species, but these studies are preliminary and do not directly address dermatitis or provide clinical data. There are no well-designed clinical trials evaluating Dianthus for dermatitis in humans. Therefore, its use for dermatitis is rooted primarily in traditional, anecdotal practice rather than robust scientific validation.
